On Dec. 4, the dog was discovered at the dumpster located on Knox Avenue shortly before 9 a.m.

An animal crate was also found among the trash, and the dog was wandering by itself in the waste and scrap.

Our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report Jwanna Martin is charged with animal cruelty and neglect.

Officials say she is the one who dumped her partner’s dog.

The dog is at Humane Animal Rescue.

A Utah family is coping with losing their dog after a vet reportedly euthanized him by mistake.

Andrea Martinez took to Facebook to share the devastating story on Monday, writing that the family took their pet dachshund Ziggy to the emergency room after “his breathing got weird.”

The emergency vet recommended surgery for Ziggy, which the family agreed to, Martinez said.

While the pup was undergoing the invasive procedure, the vet realized it was going to be “a lot more work and money than they expected” and called to get permission from the family to continue with the surgery or “go ahead and lay him down.”

However, Martinez claims she never received that call.

“But they didn’t call me,” Martinez shared in the post. “[T]hey called another [dog’s] mom thinking it was me, and she said no to go ahead and lay him down.”

Martinez did not find out her dog had been euthanized until someone from the vet’s office called later to tell her Ziggy had been put down. She said that when she “freaked out,” the vet realized “they called the wrong person the first time.”

“Then he got back on [the phone] and he apologized and said, ‘I’m so sorry that this happened, we got confused and ended up calling another dog’s mom,’” Martinez told KUTV. According to the vet, there was another dog named Ziggy, and the vet initially contacted that Ziggy’s family.

According to Martinez, she said she would have never agreed to let her dog go “without trying more” and blames the vet for “rob[bing] me the choice of saying ‘at least we tried.’”

Since finding out the heartbreaking news, Martinez has said she “can’t stop crying” and doesn’t know how to break it to her 6-year-old that “her best friend died.”

“Ziggy followed me EVERYWHERE and cuddled me every single night. He made my anxiety bearable. I feel so sick that this happened,” she wrote on Facebook.

The name of the vet in Davis County was not shared, but according to KUTV, they apologized for the unfortunate incident and waived the bill, as well as gifted the family an urn, plaque and Christmas ornament with Ziggy’s paw print.

Though with Ziggy’s condition during the surgery, there is no guarantee he would have made it through if they continued trying, per KUTV. However, that does little to help Martinez cope.

“This whole thing seriously makes me so sick to my stomach,” she said.

Caroline County Sheriff Tony Lippa said deputies were called to Chilesburg just after 5:10 p.m. after a man reported his hunting dog had been shot and killed.

“The dog, equipped with a GPS tracking collar, was participating in an active hunt when the signal stopped suddenly on the property owned by Adam Beck,” Lippa said.

“Deputies arrived on scene and approached the house, at which time Mr. Beck refused to answer or come to the door,” Lippa said. “There was apparent evidence discovered and the deputies remained on scene to prevent the destruction of this evidence.”

While several deputies remained at the house, a lieutenant and sergeant obtained an arrest and search warrant, according to Lippa.

After the warrant for his arrest was issued, officials said Beck came out of the house and was “arrested without incident.”

Officials said animal control deputies recovered the animal’s body.

Additionally, officials seized two AR-15 rifles as evidence and the dog’s damaged tracking collar was discovered inside Beck’s home, Lippa said.

Beck was booked and released on a $2500 unsecured bond from the Pamunkey Regional Jail, officials said.

However, Lippa said additional charges are pending.

“This is a reminder to all that it is illegal to remove a dog’s GPS collar and identification tags, and it is a felony to harm or kill a hunting dog,” Lippa said. “On behalf of the CCSO, we offer our sincere condolences to the dog’s owner and family.”

Officials said their investigation into the case is ongoing.

City police accuse her of assaulting the animal at her Parade Street apartment on Monday.

Erie police detectives investigating the death of an 11-month-old Labrador mix named Izzy after the dog was beaten with a hammer inside a Parade Street apartment early Monday morning picked up on inconsistencies in what the dog’s owner was telling them, Deputy Chief Mike Nolan said Wednesday.

Investigators also received information from other people that led them to question the owner’s initial report that an unknown person entered the apartment while she was away and attacked the animal, Nolan said.

The dog’s owner, 37-year-old Justina Robison, additionally gave police two different versions of what happened to Izzy before she eventually admitted to hitting the dog, he said.

Robison was charged by Erie police Detective Christopher Clement early Wednesday morning with a third-degree felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals for causing Izzy’s death, as well as misdemeanor counts of possessing an instrument of crime, cruelty to animals and false reports to law enforcement.

She was placed in the Erie County Prison on $50,000 bond following her arraignment by Erie 5th Ward District Judge Paul Bizzarro.

Nolan said Robison lied to police in her initial report, and it cost patrol officers and detectives a lot of time and effort in working the case. It also upset members of the Erie community to the point where citizens were trying to raise money to offer as a reward for information leading to the apprehension of the suspect, he said.

“Once again it shows the dedication of Erie police in solving cases like this,” Nolan said. “It was great work. These guys put aside their personal lives to work through the night.”

Robison did not give detectives a reason for why she assaulted her dog when she eventually confessed to the crime, investigators said.

Izzy was euthanized after the dog was taken by an Erie Humane Society officer to the pet emergency center because of the extent of the dog’s injuries following the attack, which happened in Robison’s apartment in the 300 block of Parade Street.

Clement charged in Robison’s criminal complaint that she used a hammer to strike the dog numerous times, then called Erie police and reported that someone entered her residence while she was not there and assaulted her dog.

City police officers who responded to the apartment on a report of an unknown situation involving a lot of blood on Monday at about 2:30 a.m. were told by Robison that she returned home at 1:40 a.m. to find the dog on the kitchen floor, and it appeared to have been beaten. Robison had taken the dog into the bathroom, where officers located it, Clement wrote in the affidavit of probable cause filed with the criminal complaint.

Officers said they recovered a bloody hammer suspected of being used to assault the dog and some duct tape suspected of being used to muzzle it. A Humane Society cruelty officer who was also involved in the investigation also turned over to city police a damaged broom handle that the dog’s owner said she believed may have been used to assault the dog, police reported Monday.

Detectives investigating the case said no evidence was found indicating that anyone broke into Robison’s apartment. They also found no evidence that anything was taken from the apartment.

There were two other dogs and a cat in the apartment but none were reported injured, according to police. The animals were turned over to a relative of Robison’s, investigators said.

Nolan said detectives spent a lot of time at first investigating Robison’s report of a burglary and following up on information she and a number of citizens provided them. That information revealed inconsistencies in Robison’s initial report, and it led to additional interviews with her, Nolan said.

The ongoing investigation eventually led detectives to no longer look at Robison as a victim, he said.

Detectives interviewed Robison on Tuesday afternoon and spoke to her again on Tuesday night, and it was during the last interview that she admitted to striking the dog with the hammer, according to police.

Robison is tentatively scheduled to appear in court for her preliminary hearing on Monday. The aggravated cruelty to animals charge she faces is a felony offense in Pennsylvania, punishable by up to seven years in prison, under changes to state law adopted during the summer of 2017.

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (WTVC) — A dog owner from Old Fort, Tennessee took her pup to get groomed at a Petco. After that grooming appointment, the dog’s ear had to be amputated.

Angela Weeks took her 5-month-old puppy named Baylee to the Cleveland Petco for a haircut. When she left, she said Baylee had two bows in her hair and everything seemed fine.

However, it’s those bows that caused Baylee to lose her ear.

The bows stayed securely in place until Angela said she took them out 3 days after their visit and realized one bow was tied to her puppy’s hair, but the other one was tied to Baylee’s ear.

“She actually put the rubber band around the ear, cutting off circulation,” said Weeks.

Weeks said she soon realized Baylee’s ear was swollen and that’s when she contacted the manager at Petco.

“He assured me that they had let go the groomer who did it and he offered, he said they would refund my money and they would pay for all medical bills,” said Weeks.

According to vet bills, Petco did refund Angela’s money and they paid for Baylee to be taken to the vet. but Angela said she didn’t think that was enough, so she went to corporate.

“He kept wanting me to give him a number as to what I felt like this was worth and I said you know, I can’t tell you that,” said Weeks.

Petco paid roughly $640 in vet bills and refunded Baylee’s grooming bill of $147. They offered Weeks $500 more on top of that. She said that’s not enough to make up for her dog losing its ear.

NewsChannel 9 reached out to Petco, and they released the following statement:

“We regret and take full responsibility for what happened to Baylee after visiting our grooming salon. At Petco, the health and safety of pets in our care is a responsibility we take very seriously.”

“After a thorough review of Baylee’s experience, it’s clear the groomer involved did not follow our animal care and safety policies. That groomer is no longer with Petco. As pet parents ourselves, we understand how distressing this experience has been for Baylee and her family. We’re committed to making it right and preventing this from happening again.”

A California couple claims a FedEx driver threw a package across their fence with so much force it squashed their tiny dog and caused such severe injuries that she needed to be euthanized.

Mitchell Galin and Keiko Napier, of Venice, said Cooper, their 4-pound Yorkshire Terrier, was laying in their yard over the weekend when a FedEx employee who was delivering a large package tossed it onto their property.

The package apparently landed on Cooper, the couple told KCBS-TV. Galin said she “immediately picked up the box, and Cooper was in a puddle of blood.”

Cooper suffered serious lung and liver injuries, per the dog’s veterinarian. The couple said they chose to have the pup euthanized.

“It was painful to watch your dog in pain,” Galin said.

FedEx said in a statement obtained by the news outlet they “extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the pet involved in this incident.”

“We take this matter very seriously and are working directly with those involved to determine the circumstances behind this event,” the company continued. “Based on the outcome of our investigation, we will take the appropriate action.”

But Napier said the response from FedEx was “not satisfactory.”

“I feel they need to say they’re going to institute a corporate-wide mandate that drivers cannot throw packages; that’s what I want to hear. I don’t want to hear we’ll look into it,” Napier said. “Our grandchild plays out here. My mother is out here gardening. I’m here gardening.

She continued, “The package was so heavy, should it have struck one of us, it would’ve caused damage — very very severe damage.”

CRAVEN COUNTY, NC (WITN) – A sad update as the Craven County Sheriff’s Office was looking to find the owner of a dog hit by a car on Highway 17 south.

The sheriff’s office says the owner was found, but unfortunately the dog died from his injuries.

in a Facebook post the sheriff’s office said, “Sampson’s owner was located, unfortunately Sampson succumbed to his injuries & has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Thanks to your generous donations, we were able to keep Sampson from suffering and his owner was located in time to say goodbye. We know this big guy will be missed terribly, but we are thankful he was reported & not left on the side of the road. Thanks again Craven County for your continued support!”

A dog that was hit by a car this morning in one Eastern Carolina county is recovering while deputies try to find his owner.

Craven County deputies say the dog was injured on U.S. 17 South. 

The dog appears to have severe injuries to his back legs, a broken tooth, and several road rash wounds.

He is being treated at Craven Animal Hospital on Old Cherry Point Road.

Deputies say if you know who the dog belongs to you should immediately call them.

The sheriff’s office says it doesn’t have the funds to care for injured, stray animals, but they are doing their best to help.

TACOMA, Wash. – A couple is in shock after their 2-year-old dog Farru was shot and killed in their own backyard Saturday night. 

Police showed up at about 9:45 p.m. after receiving a disturbance call. Aron Garcia-Pena and Paola Aguilar didn’t get home until about 30 minutes later.

“We saw that one of our dogs was just laying down in our driveway,” Garcia-Pena said. “We thought he was just sleeping or something.”

Sadly, that wasn’t the case.

Security camera footage shows a person walking down the alleyway behind Garcia-Pena and Aguilar’s property. Then, someone walking up to the fence, pulling out a weapon and shooting Farru.

The suspect then takes off running toward East Grandview Avenue.

As of right now, all police have of the suspect description is what’s in the security camera footage.

“I’m hoping people check their security cameras and see if they saw a man walk by or run by,” Aguilar said… And that they get arrested, that’s not okay.” 

They say this is the second dog they’ve lost in a year. Farru’s mom was killed by another dog that got into their backyard.

Gacria-Pena and Aguilar tell KOMO News they could have never imagined something like this would happen to their 2-year-old pup.

“Who would do this?” Aguilar said. “I mean, who has the heart to just show up to someone’s house and just shoot a dog?”

Garcia-Pena and Aguilar say they’re going to continue to canvas their neighborhood to see if anyone else might have some footage of the person that shot Farru.

“We just hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else,” Garcia-Pena said.

“We were shocked,” he added. “We didn’t even think that stuff happened here.”

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – An ex-Marine who was wounded in Iraq and suffers post-traumatic stress disorder was thrown out of a bar in Beechview Thursday night because he brought his service dog.

onight, the bar’s owner issued an apology to KDKA’s Paul Martino.

It happened at the huddle, just before kickoff for the Steelers game.

The bar’s owner claims he didn’t know he was kicking out a wounded Marine and didn’t realize it was a service dog.

But the Marine tells KDKA he’s embarrassed and angered.

Kris Jones served proudly in the Marines following 9/11. But his service ended in April of 2003 when a rocket propelled grenade hit his Jeep in Iraq.

“I was knocked unconscious for several minutes. I just remember seeing a lot of sand and heard a really loud noise,” Jones said.

Today, Jones is disabled. He suffers back, shoulder and head injuries, as well as PTSD.

“I could not breathe. I couldn’t be in public. Literally, just at a drop of a dime, out of nowhere, I would just…my body would feel like it’s shutting down, like I was absolutely dying.”

But his service dog Chopper has changed much of that.

“They force the veteran to get out of the home. I have to get out, this dog’s gonna make me get out of the house. He’s gonna make me interact with people,” said Jones.

But his trauma heightened Thursday night when he entered The Huddle in Beechview and was told he couldn’t bring in Chopper.

“I tried to show him my disabled military ID from the Marines and Chopper’s identification and what not and he put his hands up and did not even want to look at it,” said Jones.

“I made a mistake as to the evaluation as to whether he was with a service dog,” said owner Pete Wagner.

Wagner admits he made a bad judgement.

“I just made a mistake. That’s all there is to it. I should have served him and I did not,” he said.

Wagner, who is the father of Allegheny County Controller Chelsa Wagner and brother of former State Auditor General Jack Wagner, says he normally allows service dogs.

“I’m embarrassed today that I didn’t serve the fella,” said Wagner.

Jones said, “I was really upset, you know? I just wanted to cry, for a part. I haven’t slept all night. I’m just really angry.”

Wagner has extended an invitation to Jones to come back to The Huddle and have dinner on the house.

But Jones tells Paul Martino he never wants to go back there.

OKEECHOBEE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a Florida police officer fatally shot a service dog while responding to a man suffering from a seizure.

An Okeechobee police statement says the shooting happened Monday night.

Police say two officers approached a man suffering from medical issues on the side of a road. They recognized the man and were familiar with his medical history.

While one officer helped the man, his service dog began to lunge and bite at the other officer. Police say the officer pushed the dog away several times before it went for his face, prompting the officer to shoot the dog once. The animal died while being taken to a veterinarian.

Authorities say the 60-pound (27-kilogram), mixed-breed dog wasn’t wearing a service vest.

Investigators say independent eyewitness supported the officer’s account.
